• Naturalism, Symbolism, Modernism: Danish Painting from the 1890s-1920s - Tuesday, 17th August 2010

The story of the development of modernism in Denmark parallels similar narratives in many other small European nations at the turn of the 20th century. In the last years of the 19th century, naturalist painting was prominent. This gradually gave way in the first years of the new century, as the conditions for a modernist "revolt" developed; independent exhibitions, a growing interest in contemporary art in France and Germany, and the emergence of new periodicals established to discuss and disseminate radical modernist ideas, in a Danish context. In the second of a series of three lectures, Dr Jonathan Blackwood, University of Dundee, will consider the output of Harald Giersing, Karl Isakson, Olaf Rude, and Jais Nielsen, amongst others.
